Environmental Health and Safety as a Personal Responsibility

EHS starts with every employee taking personal responsibility to identify risks, act safely, protect colleagues, and safeguard the environment.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is often associated with safety officers, procedures and inspections. In reality, it begins with the everyday decisions each employee makes.

Think about your workplace. You notice a wet floor, a colleague without the correct PPE, a small oil leak, waste in the wrong bin or a blocked walkway. Do you walk past and assume someone else will handle it, or do you take action? These seemingly small choices can prevent injuries, pollution and costly incidents.

Personal responsibility does not mean becoming an EHS specialist. It means wearing the correct PPE, following safe procedures, reporting hazards and near misses, using resources responsibly, segregating waste correctly and looking out for colleagues. Before starting a task, simply ask: What could go wrong? Who or what could be affected? What can I do to prevent it?

A strong EHS culture is created when employees do the right thing even when nobody is watching. Management provides the systems and resources, but every employee has a role in making them work.

So, the next time you see an unsafe condition or environmental risk, don’t walk past it. Speak up, report it and take appropriate action. Look out for yourself, your colleagues and the environment.

See it. Own it. Act on it. Safety starts with you.

That responsibility belongs to you. It belongs to me. It belongs to every single person who walks through the factory gates, climbs the scaffolding, or sits at the office desk.
